GARE DU NORD

Paris - FRANCE

The ambition of this project is to transform the station into an urban complex, making it a new reference for the 21st century. The project is an opportunity to reinvent the overall design of the station and enhance its relationship with the city. Areas of consideration include the separation of flows between departures and arrivals as well as the redevelopment of the fundamental areas to accommodate the new services and activities. The creation of a main entrance, a large loggia open on the forecourt to the east of the historic façade of the station, provides access to a generous 300 meter long passageway beneath a glazed roof. This sunlit gallery spans the length of the new building, guiding users to departure points and serving new commercial, cultural, sporting and co-working activities. The size of the existing area will be quintupled. The project’s objective is to open up the station onto the city. It’ll no longer be a station in the city, but a city in the station. The project higlights the connections between city transport networks and the train station: new bus station, large bike station and improved access to the metro in particular. Respect for historical heritage will guide the design. The interior facade of the large hall designed by J. Hittorff in the nineteenth century will be restored to its original state becoming a landmark greeting for travellers on the main European lines.

The new stations on the Grand Paris Express network are green shoots of urban development, business catalysts, and multimodal transport hubs. Vert de Maisons station opens out onto an enlarged square surrounded by shops. Above it stands a new tertiary building, and it is connected to the RER C suburban train line.
All the Grand Paris stations respond to the same architectural specifications, which ensures coherence across the network. The architects of the various stations along each line also coordinated their work. However each station has its own personality.
The design of the Vert de Maisons station was determined by the fact that it belongs both to the Grand Paris network and to the specific world of the town in which it is located (Maison Alfort).

MONACO, sea extension

Monte-Carlo, Monaco

MONACO, sea extension

Monte-Carlo, Monaco

Creating an offshore extension is an artificial process. The project design takes the opposite view, giving credit to the idea that this new area reclaimed from the sea is natural. It strives to create two ecosystems, one terrestrial (the extension itself), the other marine (offshore from the extension).
The construction technique for the offshore extension involves building a large seawall made of reinforced concrete coffers produced off-site and shipped in. When this protective wall is complete, the infilling operation (the infill will also be brought in by sea) will be carried out without affecting the nearby seabed. The resulting platform, covering some 6 hectares, has a raised centre in the form of a hill, which justifies the new curve of the coastline it wraps around. The new landscape will be planted with a large number of umbrella pines. Under this canopy, a maquis typical of the region will be transplanted and acclimated. The district located on the new extension will be both varied and mixed. The northeast section will be laid out around the hill.
Villas will stand along the seafront, reminiscent of early urban development on the Riviera; they will be built gradually higher and higher up, ultimately forming the top level of buildings facing the sea.

GENERALI / Saint-Gobain - 50 000 SQM

Saint-Gobain Company, leader in high performance building material, will establish its new headquarters in a new tower developed by Generali Real Estate in La Défense business district of Paris.

Valode & Pistre was selected by Generali, together with Saint-Gobain and EPADESA, at the outcome of an international architectural consultation (BIG, SANAA, Renzo Piano, SOM). Designed to become the future international showcase of Saint-Gobain, the project of about 49,000 sqm of floor space on 44 floors and 165 meters high, aims to achieve an exemplary level of environmental quality with a strong emphasis on good site integration, energy performance and user comfort.

Lincity - 5000sqm

ABC comes from R&D programs that have been running for more than eight years by Bouygues Construction and Valode & Pistre.

A for Autonomous. ABC aims at autonomy in energy, water and the optimization of waste management. By combining production of renewable energies, storage of energy and better control of consumption, ABC offers an alternative notion of thinking and dwelling, an approach that is very well integrated into the natural environment from which it draws the resources necessary for its operation.
B for Building. ABC innovates by the constructive processes implemented. Objective: economic optimization of projects, by integrating processes of standardization to build faster while maintaining a very high level of quality.
C for Citizen. Beyond a purely technical approach, an essential stake of ABC resides in the association of the inhabitants throughout the process with a view to their appropriation of the specificities and innovations of the project. ABC puts the inhabitant at the heart of the work, in order to meet its current expectations and the evolutions of society: shared use of equipment, information and control system, modularity of certain spaces.

helenis / opalia - 28 000 m²

The new district of Prado Concorde, on the banks of the River Lez at the entrance to the town, combines residential developments with schools and shops in a large block arranged around a garden in the form of a valley.

The architectural design of the housing units makes maximum use of exterior extensions to allow residents to make the most of the fine weather. An extra «room» outside provides each flat with its own additional living space, complete with a tree providing shade for al fresco dining.

To achieve this aim the project uses an innovative concept: a series of large balconies whose triangular shape and variable cross-section make it possible to support their weight on consoles at their thickest point, where the built-in tree containers are. These prefabricated high-performance concrete elements are staggered from one floor to the next to provide the airflow necessary for the trees to grow.

VIPARIS - 74 000 SQM

The restructuring of Pavilion 7 into a new convention center and exhibition spaces is part of the vast renovation plan for the Parc des Expositions at the Porte de Versailles. Beginning with the rebuilding of Pavilions 4 and 5, it provides for the complete redesign of both the outdoor public spaces and the center’s logistics.

The challenge of the reconstruction of Pavilion 7 was twofold. The first involved the successful integration of this monumental building into the fabric of the Parc, despite being separated by a major ring road. The second was how to give this building from the "Brutalist" architectural era a more playful and transparent dimension while respecting and highlighting its historical character.

The new MCO (medical-surgical-obstetrics) building, the key element in the restructuring of the Gonesse hospital campus, is designed like a residential building set in a park. Its functional principle lies in a distinction between consultation and patient housing (70% panoramic), the latter facing the park and the medico-technical areas facing towards the rear. A central axis gathers all traffic and links the two zones. The architecture stands out opposite the park by its form resembling pavilions that marry white polished concrete and wood-toned blinds in a strict, measured design that evokes Japanese palaces, with their serenity and relation to nature.

The architectural vocabulary of the project corresponds to the modern and dynamic character of the new urban district, with abundant glazed facades creating a contemporary feel. Locally quarried stone, Pierre de Caen, whose quarries have just been recently reactivated, complements the glazed facades.  The project boldly assumes it’s role as a developmental corner stone and economic motor for future development of the Orne riverfront. The presence of the river and it’s corresponding views are thoughtfully exploited, with each change in viewpoint considered and materialized in the project massing and organization. The eco-district of Neuilly-sur-Marne has been designed around the principles of sustainable urban planning: Implementation of an alternative strategy for managing stormwater through swales containing vegetation and temporary retention areas. Establishing green and blue corridors using the main elements of the existing landscape. Consideration of the heritage, both the built environment and landscape, respecting the typology and size of existing buildings. Respecting the memory of the site by conserving the original compositions of the English and French garden as well as the inhabited tree-lined park. Creating a new hub at the Place Nord through experienced mixed-use and a network of public spaces hosting a variety of urban functions: local businesses, covered market, housing.

Mumbai, India

Reliance Industries LTD - 200 000 sqm

Reliance Industries entrusted Valode & Pistre with the conception of the two towers of its corporate headquarters in Bombay, along with its training center and the landscaped campus surrounding it. The architecture of the towers, which takes the form of extruded prisms of glass gradually rising into the sky, expresses the company’s energetic growth. The double façade comprise a diagonal structure whose diamond pattern evokes a traditional Indian motif. The composition of the project, organized according to a set of squares aligned on the cardinal points, takes into account the traditional Indian Vastu rules.

FGH
51 000 sqm

A pole of medical excellence for Chad and a model for Africa, the N’Djamena Hospital is the heart of an ambitious and generous health-care project. Based on broad principles already developed by Valode & Pistre – independence of the technical areas from the patient housing which is designed to be hotel-like and panoramic – the project’s design adapts itself to the heavy climatic constraints of heat and sandstorms, as well as to local difficulties with maintenance. A heavy root structure, double façades of terra cotta panels inspired by woven reeds, and natural ventilation through a network of patios with basins, give the architecture its identity. Its vocation is to serve the therapeutic treatment and the wellness of all the hospital’s users.

Daguiliev Quarter

Perm, Russia

Renova - 1000 ha

The city of Perm, in the Ural region, with its 1.5 billion inhabitants, is built on a plain overlooking the immense River Kama, and is home to Russia’s second most important school of dance. The master plan for the development of city extends over a plain with a total area of 1,000 ha, or 7 million sq. m., on the opposite bank. The new quarter, called Daguiliev, takes its inspiration from the Firebird by Stravinsky, a native of the region. The pattern of the streets, quarters, buildings, parks and gardens seems to follow the folds of the dress worn by a ballerina in that opera, like a pre-existing outline, both a reflection and the presence of the soul of the city – dance.

Akademia

Ekaterinburg, Russia

Renova Stroy Group - 1 200 ha

With a projected population of 350,000 in 20 years within its 16,000,000 sq. m., the new city of Akademia south of Ekaterinburg, in the Ural region, corresponds to the economic renewal of this region of Russia. Located on a 1,200-hectare plain traversed by the Patrushikha river and bordered by two vast natural forests, the city of Akademia is conceived of as a place of equilibrium between nature and the urban world. The plan of the city is based on alternating canals and reconstituted strips of forest linking the existing forests. In the center, a 20-hectare park – a place for relaxation and socializing – forms the heart of the city, along with the business center, commercial and cultural facilities, and luxury residential towers. The residential quarters are designed to guarantee a mixture of socio-economic levels and varied density in order to provide a great diversity of urban spaces and genuine quality of life. The careful distribution of facilities such as shops and schools facilitates travel on foot or by bicycle. The creation of a rapid-transport system on a dedicated site between the center of Ekaterinburg and the center of Akademia will temper automobile travel.

T1 Tower, GDF Suez Headquarters

La Défense, France

Colony Capital - SITQ - Hines - 70 000 sqm

The T1 Tower was conceived as a giant 200 meters high glazed surface, curved to the south and cut by a gradual arc on its north face. This new shape, whose appearance changes depending on the viewer’s vantage point, assures its insertion within its complex urban context. Following the sun’s path, this giant glazed surface, silk-screened to limit thermal loads, rises in the East to culminate in the South and descend in the West. The tower’s geometry provides vast panoramic floor plates at each level. Its design associates quality working conditions and functional efficiency.

Meudon, France

Bouygues Immobilier - 57 000 sqm

Located at the edge of the Meudon Forest, the Technopole is at the same time a showcase project, an exemplary site with regards to working conditions, and an environmental project. The arrangement of the buildings, a kind of double “V” that penetrates into the forest, creates a strong relationship with the wooded environment. Their curvilinear silhouettes, gradually rising, evoke a natural relief and culminate on the motorway side to form a signal. The treatment of the façades is adapted to the different orientations – panoramic toward the North in the direction of the forest, diaphragmed to the East and West, and shaded to the South.

COGEDIM - SOGEPROM - ADIM / 22 000 sqm

A strategic link in the re-qualification of Paris’s Porte des Lilas, the “Cinetic” office building respects the expected symmetry effect and assumes the role of gateway between Paris and the contiguous suburbs. The project presents different, strongly identified façades according to the orientation and the nearby buildings – in particular the Northwest façade on the Avenue de la Porte des Lilas, which stands out for its innovative, irregular folded patterns. The folds oriented to the north on the suburban side are in clear glass, and those facing west on the Paris side are in silk-screened glass, serving as the medium for a work by the artist Elisabeth Ballet, representing a close-up of a chestnut tree and its branches.

Générale de Santé
35 000 sqm

The pilot project of Générale de Santé in Le Havre, the L’Estuaire Private Hospital lays the foundations of a new hospital typology, one that distinguishes between canonical medical architecture and patient accommodation. It is an efficient, technical, modular and adjustable medical facility paired with accommodation having all the comforts of a hotel. Serving as the starting point for a new city quarter, the project draws its architectural material from climatic data and local references. Wide, curving façades recall the deck palisades of ocean liners; the building’s basement is made of bricks from the region; patios planted with gardens afford protection from the wind. In the interior, vast naturally lit halls add to the patients’ feeling of well-being and to the quality of relations with the caregivers.

Fangxin group - 55 ha

The project to rebuild this district near the Great Wall of China began with in-depth analysis of the architectural heritage. Aside from the magnificent gate of the fortified city, temples, a small fort and houses were identified for restoration. The historic outline of the city guided the new organization of the public spaces. Despite the increase in density, the height of the buildings was modulated so as to give the buildings bordering the streets a scale closer to the traditional architecture of Chinese cities. Instead of the tabula rasa approach so often used, the Zhang Jia Kou New Town resolutely allies tradition and modernity.

Da Gennin Tower

Ekaterinburg, Russia

Ekat City - UGMK - 82 000 sqm

The Gennin Tower, named for one of the founders of Ekaterinburg, is a key element of the Ekat-City project. Its architectural design, inspired by the crystallization of minerals – the source of the region’s wealth – evokes pyrite, still being mined today. Its gold-colored façade, set with large blocks in an asymmetrical geometry, gives the tower the silhouette of a giant block of pyrite. Like the other towers of EkatCity, its connection to the network of footbridges and circulation areas in the lower levels, as well as its technical and operational performance, make it a tower of the new generation. Another “jewel in the crown” of the new Ekaterinburg, the Gennin Tower, with its 50 stories, will also be one of the tallest towers in modern Russia.

Regency Hyatt Hotel

Ekaterinburg, Russia

BBI/UGMK - 35 000 sqm

The construction of a luxury hotel is the first built project of the vast Ekat City project in Ekaterinburg. The site is exceptional; the hotel is luxurious, and its design and construction are French… Standing alongside the Iset River, the facility aligns with the axis of the cathedral.  The building adopts lightness in its enveloping, protective shape. The slim, crystalline 80-meter tower offers a panorama of its surrounding environment.  On the city side, a series of technological filters marrying stone, copper and glass produces a subdued atmosphere for fluid, airy interior circulation.  On the river side, a glass shield with an outward-curving profile provides the 300 rooms with total visibility of the river and the horizon beyond. Here, luxury lies in the magnified relation to the immensity of nature and to Russian culture.

CITY CANAL LIMITED - 8 ha

The block plan for the rebuilding of the Graving Docks in Glasgow is organized around the restoration of the central dock. The other two docks will be filled in and built upon. Unused for more than 20 years, the 8 hectare site will include a hotel, a shopping and leisure center, a residential zone and offices. The buildings adopt the silhouette of ship’s hulls, with their prows pointed at the river, seeming to integrate themselves into the place. With the other facilities already built or planned in the area, the Graving Docks project will constitute a center of activity on the river’s banks.

Rodez Hospital

Rodez, France

Centre Hospitalier de Rodez - 49 000 sqm

Built to serve an entire region, the Rodez Hospital houses all of the different units. Structured by a double-cross plan, the building rises from a pedestal of red sandstone. The wings house clinic services and in-patient wards, while the main body of the building houses common services, with the vertical circulation cores are at the crossings. The technical level, served by a logistical platform on the floor below, constitutes the hospital’s underpinning. Natural light penetrates into all areas, including into the basement floors, into which numerous patios open. The care and attention given the patients’ accommodations, on the one hand, and the working environment of the medical personnel are the twofold challenge the hospital meets.

Clichy, France

Holiday Inn Hotel

Clichy, France

COGEDIM - 12 400 sqm

Wrapped in a horizontal band, the new Holiday Inn Hotel in Clichy is a technological designer object which both affirms the brand’s identity and smoothes the contours of the city. In a front-line position on the Paris beltway, it seems to turn its back on environmental nuisances in a protective gesture. Its streamlined volume creates a bright and peaceful entryway into the city. The wide bay windows opening onto the salons and restaurant at ground level create a relationship with the street outside. The shift in the sequence of windows in the façade revitalizes the composition and underlines the singular expression of the rounded corner, treated as a diaphragm. The high-definition façade is broken down into two tones, with ochre terra cotta panels that recall the local brick and metal festoons accenting the levels. Thus the building meets the requirements both of hotel operation and urban integration, while offering its own specific architectural identity.

Located at the historic site occupied by Lancôme perfumes, the research center is part of the Chevilly-Larue campus. Designed like a machine, it is built on a square plan with the research spaces in the middle and the researchers’ offices on the façade, housed in cantilevered volumes. In these “nests” in the sky, the scientists are at home, freed of daily cares and able to concentrate fully on their work, following a principle of domestic intimacy. The alternate play of the louvers during the day and the lighting at night complement the animation of these façades, whose interactive nature gives evidence of the activity within.

CENTRE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY BIOPARK

Paris 13 - France

SAGI / 35 000 sqm

The industrial hotel of the Austerlitz development zone with its architecture dating from the 1980s has found a new destiny as a biotechnologies center. The structure of this imposing building, an example of its era, remains unchanged. The work done re-frames, redistributes, and redefines the ensemble to better integrate it into the city and link it to the new university quarter built on the bank of the Seine. The architectural volumes have been sectioned to make way for a new traffic pattern leading to a central square. The once austere inner core has become a green space with terraced façades, covered with a generous undulating pergola where roses, bellflowers, acanthus and clematis grow. This green cascade protects the offices from the sun and spills over into the square.

Nexity España/Standard Life - 78 500 sqm

This new business and office center near the airport is designed to be a vast urban campus – urban in its island structure, where the modular buildings are aligned along peripheral streets; a campus because of the vast central park at its heart. The entrance groups together all the common services in an entry pavilion spanned by a pergola linking the different buildings. The central garden affords protection from the nuisances of the major arteries as its vegetation is arranged in stepped terraces. Below it, restaurants open onto a basin which, together with the trees, provides coolness and tranquility.

AXA - COGEDIM - 36 000 sqm

On the southern side of the Esplanade, in the part of La Défense undergoing renewal, the Opus 12 Tower has been revamped and stands out with its new appearance. In place of the corncob-shaped columns that marked its façades is a lighter, more panoramic load-bearing structure. The resulting gain in floor area has enlarged the work spaces. The technical facilities have been adapted to today’s needs. Enveloped in a double skin of clear and opalescent glass, it takes on new meaning. The vast, high lobby opens resolutely on to the Esplanade and into the tower’s infrastructure, revealing its anchoring.

Havas Advertising Headquarters

Suresnes, France

HINES - 22 800 sqm

Located on the banks of the Seine River, the building respectfully harmonizes with the former Coty perfume plant, a fine example of the architecture of the 1930’s. In a dialogue between two architectures, the task was to designate, to reveal. Behind the smaller-scaled brick building is a first glass screen, like a backdrop, and then the other buildings. The contemporary architecture asserts itself, but without imposing its presence. Parallel to the Seine, three wings intersect with brick volumes that prolong the former factory, and form an alternating sequence of buildings and gardens. Brick, the preserved building’s characteristic, appears in variations – transversal façades bases, fine lines embedded in the glass –, making for a unified and contemporary reading of the architectural ensemble.

VIParis - Unibail - 22 800 sqm

Located in the Parc d’Expositions de la Porte de Versailles, the building asserts its presence in the city as an urban exhibition hall. To accommodate the sloping site, two halls were superimposed, with 70-meter-wide floor spans and total flexibility of use. On the city side, the façade, constructed of large aluminum-clad panels and glazed curtain walls, is placed on a solid base made up of layers of polished concrete. The roof forms a vast undulating form on the scale of the site itself, with seven large curvilinear canopies advancing toward the boulevard. On the esplanade in front of the hall, the main façade, visible from far off, is made up of a louvered exterior screen wall that serves as a support for lighting and giant advertising panels, behind which is a transparent curtain wall giving onto the superimposed halls. Monumental stairways and escalators are organized symmetrically in the space between them, forming a pronaos, leading to a belvedere with a unique view of Paris.

This was originally a large group of buildings dating from the early 1960s, set in an exceptionally fine park wooded. Simplification of the structure, the addition of new volumes, reorganization of the vertical and horizontal circulations, renovation of the façades, and new interior fittings provide communication, flexibility, divisibility and a quality of working conditions that correspond to the most contemporary requirements regarding office spaces. The new façade, with its airy glazed partitions, provides a feeling of transparency and modernity which echoes and prolongs the original architectural options of the 1960s.

Meunier Promotion / 19 000 sqm

Located at the intersection between Paris's new Seine Rive Gauche quarter and older, preserved areas, the building follows the shape of the complex site. Along the Avenue de France, a long glass wall, sober and contemporary, reflects the curved shape of the lot. With its curved glass prow and glazed footbridges, the building at times allows the viewer to see completely through it. Facing the older Paris buildings, the scale and materials of the façades provide a subtle transition between two types of construction and between two eras. At once contextual and contemporary, the building prolongs and connects the historic areas and the new quarter.

Cap Gemini University

Gouvieux, France

Cap Gemini - 23 000 sqm

Cap Gemini Ernst & Young University is a place of corporate identity where a company’s cohesion can take root. The site, near Chantilly, comprises an immense park dating from the 18th century and a château built by the Rothschild family. The park has been returned to its original boundaries and the château has been restored to its original grandeur.  The new campus, with its brick-and-stone buildings and concentric copper disks, is inscribed in a half-circle, centered on the main axis of the château. The shape unifies; the materials engage in dialogue. The campus and the château resonate together. The principal figure borrows as much from the orangerie as it does from the ancient cloister. The semi-circular space, closed by the façade of the château, recreates a serene setting, freed from the contingencies of the outside world – a place for concentration and intellectual effervescence. From the eclectic château to the resolutely contemporary campus, the quality and permanence of the architecture echo the exellence and long life the company aspires to.

The former wine warehouse buildings of Paris, with their rough stone walls and sloped roofs of flat brown tiles, are aligned perpendicular to the Seine River. Boutiques, bars and restaurants now give the place new life. On either side of the restored warehouse buildings, new ones have been built as an extension of the existing ones. Long pleated zinc roofs echo their rythm and geometry on a larger scale. The structures are metal with stone fill, glazing, or wood weatherboarding. From the small warehouse buildings of the early 20th century to the new shops, Bercy Village takes into account time and place in a quest for authenticity.

Air France Headquarters and Cité PN

Roissy, France

Air France / 100 000 sqm

Facing the runways, visible from the boarding lounges at Roissy 2 Airport, the company headquarters of Air France and the Cité PN stress dynamism and permanence. The long white façade, rising incrementally as the floors rise, creates a tension like that of takeoff, establishing a relation with the airplanes. Set on a trapezoidal lot, the project extends to the point of occupying the site in its entirety without seeming to. The different buildings that make it up are organized around gardens. From the square in front, the eye passes through three successive glazed-in volumes, glass towers whose transparency reveals the full depth of the site. The layout of the buildings is precise and evolving, with each new element articulated with the preceding one and modulated to suit the site. It is above all an urban layout, whose variations of scale and height establish a vaster world around the individual. The company headquarters of Air France is a building of impressive reach. It is an architectural response to a set of complex questions, borrowing from various fields – working lifestyle, the brand image of a prestigious airline, the constraints of a site subject to high noise levels; but also a poetic evocation of the ballet performed by the airplanes, ceaselessly landing and taking off.

At the foot of the hill of Montmartre, the Bretonneau Geriatric Hospital extends out from the buildings of the original hospital. The new buildings are organized in a strict matrix, a network of built spaces articulated by quiet gardens. From one century to the other, the architectures echo each other. In a new concept, the Bretonneau Geriatric Hospital brings elderly persons to live in Paris, in an urban place that is respectful of their intimacy. An interior street runs through it, bringing together meeting spaces. The hospitalization units are organized in the form of houses, with some fifteen persons living in each. The forms, the materials and the fittings reconstitute a domestic universe, essential for patients to feel at home.

Valeo
10 000 à 23 000 sqm

A diversity of places, activities, companies… Around the world, Valeo has built numerous plants using the Valode & Pistre “generic factory” design guide. A strategic reflection on each project, it includes the definition of the elements that make it up, their relative positioning and their reciprocal relations with a concern for flexibility, extensibility, quality working conditions, architectural identity and respect for the environment. From the cross-referencing of these parameters comes the particular pertinence of a solution adapted to each situation – in Bouznika in Morocco, Veszprem in Hungary, San Luis Potosi in Mexico, Skawina in Poland, or Wuhan in China. On the basis of this industrial and architectural approach, Valode & Pistre have already built twelve plants for the Valeo group.

Ciné Cité Strasbourg

Strasbourg, France

UGC - 17 000 sqm

Between the Austerlitz basin and the RN 4 highway, the UGC Ciné Cité is the first building in a new quarter of Strasbourg. On one side is the traffic headed for Germany; on the other are the still waters, the embankment, and the pedestrians. The site stands out for this duality; the architecture is founded on this ambivalence. In the interior is an immense lighted entry hall, followed by “streets” on two levels. The ambiance darkens gradually to reach the total darkness of the cinemas’. At each end, the Ove and UGC Max rooms balance one another. Covered in green copper, they contribute to this urban landmark.

VIParis - Unibail - 20 000 sqm

Expo Hall 4 is the first stage in the vast plan to restructure the Parc des Expositions at the Porte de Versailles Paris Expo site. It is designed to be a facility of exceptional dimensions: 250 m long by 84 m wide, with a clear interior height of 10.50 m. Technical spaces in the ceilings – like those in a theater – as well as in the basements make the various networks available throughout the building, providing for total flexibility of use. Giant beams span the 84-meter width of the building, freeing the space of supporting columns. The entrances to the hall are signaled and magnified by the immense lever arms that hold the beams in tension. Associated with linear sky lighting, they mark the east-west axis and provide orientation and visual ease within the interior volume, for exhibitors as well as for the public. Bordering on the Boulevard Périphérique (Paris beltway), the building is becoming the emblem of VIP Paris.

The French headquarters of Johnson & Johnson is inserted into the regular pattern of streets, presenting its subtle angle to the cityscape with façades that are both restrained and of high quality. It is urban architecture as much as it is the creation of a universe – that of Johnson & Johnson, where people move about, communicate, and work; a specific universe, a world unto itself. Two long parallel buildings face each other, revealing a warm and welcoming space in the area between – a central garden, a long glazed-in gallery opening onto the common spaces, and connecting towers and footbridges between the two buildings.

Renault / 230 000 sqm

A point of formal and functional convergence, La Ruche (“The Hive”) houses the workshops and research offices of the Renault Technocentre. It is the place where Renault vehicles are created, from fundamental and applied research to prototypes. Its complex functioning, characterized by an extreme need for communication, depends on its crisscrossing network of buildings organized around planted courtyards. In the center are three wide atriums, covered with an immense glazed roof supported by wood arches, forming the central core of information and meetings for the entire Technocentre. The stone and wood, allied with the glass and metal façades, underline the project’s twofold dimension: the scale of the individual and the scale of the industrial group.

Léonard de Vinci University

Courbevoie, France

Conseil Général des Hauts de Seine - 55 000 sqm

In the context of the La Défense business quarter, the Leonardo da Vinci University Center asserts is singularity, both intellectual and cultural. In front of a long grey rectilinear building stand three elegant freestanding forms, like sculptures in front of their cymatium, archetypal shapes playing against the background. The colors and materials accentuate the sculptural effect – the two prism forms, one set within the other, are of brown granite; the hollowed cube is clad in green marbled granite and the “prow,” an inverted cone, is of white marble. This play of forms corresponds to a clear functional organization: In the “backdrop” building are the teaching facilities, flexible and upgradable, and in the three freestanding edifices are the laboratories, administrative offices, and library. Between them runs a dense, animated, well-lit interior street. Along it are the community facilities – cafeteria, coffee bar, gymnasiums – where there are many opportunities for encounters between students and professors.

Direction régionale des affaires culturelles - 10 000 sqm

The Grenier d’Abondance was built under Louis XIV for storing grain; in 1993 it became the Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (Regional Cultural Affairs Department). Inside is an extraordinary interior space: On three levels are immense rooms supported by three rows of groined arches and accessed by a central monumental stairway. Onto the essentially curvilinear structure of the arches, columns and capitals, an orthogonal structure has now been superimposed, made up of planes, ceilings and floors. Once a place for storage, the Grenier d’Abondance now houses, with the integrity of its original structure preserved, a contemporary architecture suited to work place. It is one approach to authenticity: Classical architecture and contemporary expression interlace and emphasize each other in a dialogue that spans time.

L'Oréal Factory

Aulnay-sous-bois, France

L’ORéAL
33 000 sqm

The factory in Aulnay-sous-Bois meets a twofold requirement – that of a production facility turned towards a new industrial practice, and that of a showcase visited by thousands. Between suburban tract housing and industrial buildings, a flower has bloomed in Aulnay. A white corolla with a green centre, it spreads forth its three petals in ample undulation. It is an alliance of poetry and geometry, a complex torus figure enclosing an interior world, a perfumed garden. Each petal corresponds to a production unit. They are free spaces where light floods in. The undulation of the roof differentiates the packing zone (on the garden), the preparation zone, and the manufacturing zone (under the highest part of the roof). The three units are independent; a footbridge crosses them, overlooking the workshops and out towards the interior garden. An expression of the values of beauty and elegance that characterize L’Oréal’s activity, the Aulnay-sous-Bois factory is summed up in the gracefulness of its roof. The architecture turns geometry into the poetic expression of a workplace. This project was awarded the Equerre d’Argent prize.

As the Shell France Corporate Headquarters was moving from Paris to Rueil, the task was to define a new place, to build a site as much as construct an edifice, and to provide space and gardens for a new quality of life. Fragmentation and articulation of volumes make each entity legible. The rigorous, functional composition is paralleled by a sensitive, poetic one – pathways along the river, views of the gardens, the movement of water from fountain to basin and then into the river. Facing the Seine below, the buildings rise as they move away, each time revealing a view of the river and its opposite bank.

Its rigorous design, ingenious construction system, and the beauty of its masterful geometry make of it an architecture of light  and mass.  The adaptive-reuse project is committed to the comprehension of and deep respect for this architecture of golden limestone and warm brick. The play of horizontal and vertical planes captures a portion of space while at the same time revealing the space that contains them. A white wall sometimes fills in an arch, sometimes partially masks it, prompting the visitor to reconstruct it mentally and thus inciting a new way of looking at it. Here one architecture is held within and holds another in this contemporary intervention, both architectures, old and new are restored and the comprehension of each is clear.

The interior concept of the Hyatt hotel is a contemporary transposition of emblematic Russian themes. The themes take the form of beautiful images – the forest, the grandiose celebrations the Russians have a genius for organizing, the warmth of the isbas, the refinement of the 18th-century houses, the visionary creativity of Suprematism, the crystals of the Ural, the mist on frozen lakes, the golden light of the icons. In addition to creating a pleasant place to stay, Valode & Pistre ambition for this hotel is for it provide clients, beyond the quality reception associated with Hyatt establishments, a true feeling that they will discover the Russian soul, powerful and cultivated, savage and warm.

Mission de Supervision de la Rénovation Immobilière - 25 000 sqm

The renovation of the buildings on the Rue de l’Université and Rue Saint-Dominique was an opportunity to propose an ensemble uniting the two buildings and their various functional entities with an entry hall and interior accesses. A new impetus was given by : opening the gardens onto the reception spaces and bringing light into the core of the building. In this spirit, the tone of the interior ambiances is set by the luminosity of the wall and floor coverings : silk-screened glass for the elevator halls, light tones of European oak for the walls and white granite for the floors.

Tamdeen Group

For the Tamdeen Group’s multiplex cinema projects in Kuwait and Qatar, Valode & Pistre created an architectural line that is immediately identifiable, a concept that adapts to the context of each project while maintaining a strong, instantly recognizable image. A black interior envelope, a pure and radical ambiance, contrasts with the multicolored universe of the shopping centers in which the cinemas are located. It is a black and white universe, set off by large projection cones, clad in chrome or gold leaf. Each cinema has a signature in the form of a unique  “light sculpture”.
